Activity: Secondary School Remote Learning Session

This activity was put together as a remote learning session in place of an in-person workshop for McLaren High School. The activity involves using online resources to research the archaeology of your local area, with a focus on sites in and around Callander, though it could easily be adapted for any other area in Scotland. An informal introductory video sets out the aims of the hillforts project and the results of the excavations, and an activity guides them through using three websites: PastMap, Canmore and Atlas of Hillforts. As well as discovering how to use these websites to gain new information, learners are asked to consider how they can evaluate whether these websites are likely to provide accurate, high quality information.

The worksheet can be filled in on a tablet/computer or by hand using a printed worksheet. If using the latter option, ideally learners might receive the URLs via email or similar to save typing them out.

The teachers’ answers provided are based on McLaren High School being the starting point/location.
