Visit Dunmore

If you are local to Callander, Dunmore is a great hillfort to visit with your learners. There is parking nearby, giving access to a road-free walking route, and once there, the fort has substantial enclosing ramparts that are clear and easy to see on the ground (some forts’ remains are quite denuded and difficult to make out on the ground).

Safety First

Bear in mind that the site has sheer drops, the ground is rough underfoot, and the route up (and down) is steep. You should visit first to help you conduct a thorough risk assessment before returning at a later date with your learners. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

Getting There

Parking is available at Bochastle Car Park, just off the A821. From here, you can follow the Great Trossachs Path for around 1km to the foot of Dunmore. A signpost marks a right turn to take the path to the fort; it is a short but steep and rough climb to the summit. As you approach the top of the hill, the path cuts through the ramparts and into the central enclosure.
